PRODUCTION DISCUSSIONS · 3–4 MAR 2026

The team has clarified the core production logic for Morero: two distinct family yards are needed, Habani is the main scouting focus, and the wedding must read as a traditional Setswana ceremony rather than a Western one. The wedding sequence remains the biggest production set-piece, with a practical plan for live extras on set and optional crowd extension in post.

Recent discussions also sharpened the missing-cow subplot, costume differentiation between the two families, and the visual design of key beats such as the cattle-post search, the uncle arriving with cows on a trailer, and the family confrontation before the ceremony.

Translation Readiness

NEW ENGLISH WORKING VERSION RECEIVED

An English-language version of Morero has been added to the project archive, improving circulation across the Botswana–Denmark collaboration without flattening the story’s Setswana cultural core.

The translated script keeps key cultural markers — lobola, kgotla protocol, cattle exchange, and the emotional stakes between Kutlwano and Lesego — while making the material easier to review for international producers, departments, and external collaborators.

COLLABORATION VALUE
Helps directors, producers, and department heads align more quickly on scene flow, props, and logistics.
CULTURAL INTEGRITY
The project remains rooted in Setswana tradition and Molepolole heritage; the English version is a bridge, not a replacement.
PRACTICAL READINESS
Useful for cross-border review, festival-facing summaries, and production coordination as the film develops.

Director's Notes

Tone & Mood

  • Balance intimacy and tradition
  • Emotional tension between Kutlwano & Lesego contrasted with warmth of family and cultural rituals
  • Mood arc: heartbreak (Sc.1) → determination (Sc.2–4) → conflict (Sc.10–12) → resolution & joy (Sc.13)

Visual Style

  • Naturalistic cinematography: warm golden light for family & tradition, cooler tones for conflict & heartbreak
  • Close-ups for emotional intensity (Lesego's tears, Kutlwano's pleading)
  • Wide shots for cultural gatherings, landscapes, cattle scenes — emphasize heritage
  • Drone shots (as scripted) highlight Molepolole's grandeur, connect personal love to community tradition

Performance Direction

  • Authenticity first: actors should embody real emotional struggle, not melodrama
  • Subtle gestures (eye contact, pauses, body language) carry as much weight as dialogue
  • Respect for tradition: elders' scenes must feel dignified, with deliberate pacing and composed body language
  • Romantic sincerity: Kutlwano's vulnerability and Lesego's strength should be clear contrasts that evolve toward balance

Cultural Anchoring

  • Showcase Setswana traditions (lobola negotiations, cattle exchange, family gatherings) with respect and accuracy
  • Use song, ululation, and ritual gestures to root the story in community identity
  • Costumes and props (mats, cattle kraal, traditional attire) should feel lived-in, not staged

Themes

  • Love vs. Responsibility: Kutlwano must prove his love through action, not words
  • Tradition vs. Modernity: educated characters navigate cultural expectations
  • Family & Community: marriage is not just between two people, but between families and heritage
  • Resilience: despite setbacks (lost cow, disagreements), perseverance leads to joy

Pacing

  • Slow, deliberate rhythm in negotiation and family scenes
  • Quicker, emotionally charged pacing in arguments and conflicts
  • Gradual build-up toward the celebratory climax in Scene 13

📍 Locations

🔎 Scouting Area: Habani

Team agreed to scout for traditional compounds in Habani area. Need two separate family yards. Traditional roundhouses (rondavels) preferred. Mix of traditional and modern elements acceptable — timeline is set around year 2000, so some modern houses OK if not too contemporary. Avoid overly English-style architecture. Contact assistance offered for location finding.

LOC-1: Mmakutlwano's Yard — Sc. 2, 3, 6, 10, 11, 12c · MAIN LOCATION

Traditional Tswana homestead with yard, low fence, shade tree. Rondavels or traditional structures preferred. Must support: kgotla seating area (mats + chairs in circle), fire pit with kettle, space for 10+ elders. Needs to be large enough for Rramolefe to drive a hilux into the yard (Sc.12c). Cattle kraal area nearby for authenticity. Scout in Habani area.

LOC-2: Mmaagwe Lesego's Yard — Sc. 4, 5, 7, 12a, 13

Bride's family compound — must be a separate property from LOC-1 (two distinct family yards). Needs kgotla space for formal negotiations (mats on floor, designated elder seating). Must support the wedding celebration (Sc.13) — room for 50–100 extras singing/dancing. Sweepable yard (Sc.4). Rondavels preferred. Scout in Habani area.

LOC-3: Cattle Post / Kraal — Sc. 8

Dusty kraal with wooden fencing, countryside setting. Evening shoot — needs lanterns casting warm glow. Only lobola cows present (8 head). Dust rising from ground as cows shift. Quiet location (minimal traffic noise). Could be attached to one of the Habani compounds or a nearby cattle post.

LOC-4: Lesego's Room — Sc. 9, 12b · INTERIOR

Bedroom with bed, curtains filtering afternoon sunlight. Intimate, warm. Could be a room in the LOC-2 house if it has a suitable interior.

LOC-5: Road — Sc. 1

Walking path / road for opening scene. Kutlwano kneels, Lesego walks away. Needs distance for her exit. Rural feel.

LOC-6: Phuthadikobo Hills — Sc. 5 insert · DRONE

Drone shot required. Slow rise from behind hills, sweep across rocky terrain to reveal Molepolole village. Late afternoon golden light. Reddish-brown boulders, green vegetation, dirt paths, homestead clusters. Establishes cultural/geographic setting.

👔 Costumes

🎨 Costume Strategy — from team discussion

Kutlwano

  • Casual smart — clean but not rich
  • Good trousers (gets dusty when he kneels Sc.1)
  • More formal for kgotla scenes
  • Best outfit for final celebration

Lesego

  • Casual for opening argument (Sc.1)
  • House clothes for sweeping scene (Sc.4)
  • Intimate/relaxed for bedroom scenes (Sc.9, 12b)
  • Traditional bride outfit for Sc.13 celebration

Elders & Family

  • Traditional formal attire for all kgotla scenes
  • Malome, Mmaditselana, Mmakutlwano — dignified, authoritative
  • Cultural protocol clothing — no jeans, no t-shirts
  • Mothers: long skirt/dress, headwrap
  • Each family in coordinated colour palette — helps audience track alliances

Rramolefe

  • Arrives driving — practical cattleman clothes
  • Hat, dusty boots, khaki or brown
  • Should look like he's come from far — travel-worn

Sc.13 — Wedding Celebration

⚡ Production Notes

🐄 Cattle — #1 Production Challenge

The entire story revolves around 8 live lobola cows. Only lobola cows present at the wedding — not a herd. Need access to a real kraal for Sc.8 (counting scene with lanterns). Sc.12c: Rramolefe (uncle) arrives with 2 cows on a trailer as a gift/solution — one missing cow creates the central story tension. Must arrange with a cattle farmer in Molepolole/Habani area. This is the schedule blocker.

🎭 Wedding Scene — Most Expensive/Complex

Sc.13 is the biggest production moment. 50–100 on-set extras manageable (ask them to bring own traditional outfits). 200+ more added in post-production VFX to fill out the celebration. Traditional Setswana wedding format — not Western white wedding. Needs coordination with singers who know the traditional songs. Budget for catering/transport for extras.

📝 Script Revision — Visual Storytelling

🎥 Drone Shot — Phuthadikobo Hills

Script calls for a specific aerial: drone rises from behind hills, sweeps across rocky terrain to reveal Molepolole. Late afternoon golden light. Reddish-brown boulders, green vegetation, homesteads stretching to horizon. Confirm drone operator + permissions. Can be shot independently of cast schedule.

🌅 Time-of-Day Sensitivity

Multiple scenes demand specific lighting: Sunset (Sc.2, 4 — golden hour behind hills), Evening (Sc.8 — lantern-lit kraal), Early morning (Sc.10 — kettle + fire), Late afternoon (Sc.9 — sunlight through curtains). Plan shoot days around golden hour windows.

🗣️ Language & Cultural

Heavy Setswana dialogue — actors must be fluent. Mix of Setswana and English throughout. Traditional songs needed for Sc.13 finale ("Re se tsere segonyana..." and "Ba re file moremedi..."). Consult with elders on kgotla protocol accuracy — seating positions, speaking order, gestures. Cultural advisor on set recommended.

📋 Scheduling Notes

Group by location: Mmakutlwano's Yard covers 6 scenes (Sc. 2, 3, 6, 10, 11, 12c) — can be a full shoot day. Lesego's family yard covers 5 scenes (Sc. 4, 5, 7, 12a, 13) — second full day. Cattle post (Sc.8) needs evening/dusk — half day. INT Lesego's room (Sc. 9, 12b) can wrap early on either day. Road (Sc.1) is a quick pickup.
